A paddle day with the family on the Traun is one of the finest outings Upper Austria has to offer. To make sure the day is relaxed and nothing is missing, we have put together the ultimate packing list. What you should bring, what TraunXperience provides and what is better left at home -- everything at a glance.

Clothing and Footwear

The right clothing makes the difference between a perfect day and an uncomfortable one. On the water you will very likely get wet -- that is part of the fun.

  • Quick-drying clothing: Synthetic or merino wool instead of cotton. Sports shirts and lightweight hiking trousers are ideal.
  • Water shoes or sturdy sandals: Neoprene shoes, aqua shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Open flip-flops are unsuitable.
  • Hat: Cap or sun hat with a chin strap so it does not blow away.
  • Light rain jacket: Even in sunshine. The weather in Upper Austria can change quickly.
  • Swimwear underneath: Wear a swimsuit or trunks under your clothes -- then you can take a spontaneous cooling-off break.

What TraunXperience Provides

With us you do not need to bring your own equipment. Everything essential is included in the tour price:

  • Life jacket: CE-certified, in all sizes from toddler to adult. Fitted on site.
  • Paddle: Size-adjusted for adults and children.
  • Boat: Stable Canadian canoes, SUPs or rafts -- depending on the tour booked.
  • Waterproof dry bag: For phone, keys and valuables. At least one per boat.
  • Wetsuit (optional): Available free of charge for cool weather or early/late in the season.
  • Briefing and safety introduction: Before every tour, explained in a way children can understand too.

Sun Protection and Health

On the water, UV exposure is significantly higher due to reflection than on land. Children with sensitive skin need particular protection.

  • Sunscreen SPF 50: Waterproof, apply generously. Do not forget ears, neck and the tops of feet.
  • Drinking water: At least 1 litre per person. A little more for children, as they dehydrate faster.
  • Snacks: Cereal bars, fruit, nuts, sandwiches. Light, nutritious and not too crumbly.
  • Sunglasses with a strap: Polarised lenses are ideal on the water. A strap prevents loss.
  • Insect repellent: Particularly useful in the evening hours and near the riverbank.

Extras for the Children

Children experience a paddle day differently from adults -- more intensely, more wildly and with more splashing. A few extras make the day even better for the little ones.

  • Change of clothes: A complete set including underwear and socks. Leave it in the car for after the tour.
  • Small towel: For in between or after a swim.
  • Waterproof phone case: So the children (and you) can take photos along the way without risking the phone.
  • Drinking bottle with a seal: Leak-proof so nothing floats around in the boat.
  • Nature guide or identification card: Turns the tour into an explorer adventure. Which bird was that? Which tree stands on the bank? Our school programmes use exactly this approach.

What to Leave at Home

Less is more on the water. These items are best left in the car or at home:

  • Valuables: Jewellery, expensive watches and large amounts of cash do not belong on the water.
  • Cotton jeans: Get wet, stay wet, become heavy and cool you down. The worst choice for paddling.
  • Flip-flops: Offer no grip, slip off and are easily lost. Sturdy water shoes are a must.
  • Bluetooth speakers: The Traun lies within a Natura 2000 protected area. Music disturbs wildlife and other nature lovers. Enjoy the soundtrack of nature instead.
  • Glass bottles: Risk of breakage in the boat. Stainless steel or plastic drinking bottles are safer.
